What is wrong with my brain?

Sometimes, for no reason at all, I get a really bad song inside my head.

I won't have heard the song for ages, and there's usually no direct or seemingly indirect reason for me to remember it, but it'll suddenly get in my head. Then I start humming it. Then people laugh at me.

It's NOT GOOD.

In the past I've had a couple of Sophie Ellis Bextor songs, plus Quit Playing Games with My Heart by some-boyband-or-other, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and plenty of others.

Today, it's "I've Had The Time Of My Life".

I swear something is definitely wired-up wrong in my head.

Still, at least sharing this problem makes me feel a little better - and I owe it all to yoooo-ooooouuu.... *

* Yes, that was awful. But not as bad as the freakin' song!!!

Goosepimples whilst driving

I don't think I've ever had goosepimples whilst driving*, but in the past 4 days I've had them twice. It's not been because I'd forgotten to turn my heaters on (that was more of a shaking fit... I mean, er, no, no I didn't forget to turn my heaters on, that would be stupid).

The first occasion was on Saturday, at just before midday. Listening to *that* drop kick go over-and-between the posts to win us the Rugby World Cup. Wow, what a moment. I ended up having to pull into the next service station to watch the celebrations on telly.

Not that I'm sad.

The second occasion was this morning, on the way into work. I tuned into Radio 1 (after Dream started playing a Sophie Ellis Bextor song) to hear Scott Mills:

<Scott> "...right now on Radio 1, I will place a large amount of money on the fact that no other station is playing as good a tune as I am, right now."

He was right. Michael Andrews (thanks FF ;-) ) feat. Gary Jules started. Mad World started playing on Radio 1.

I think whoever was in the car infront of me must've thought I was insane for the "woohoo" style movements I did with my arms, followed by the happy drumming of my steering wheel for a good 10 seconds. Oddly enough, they did turn off at the next junction. But wow! What a moment!

Just thought I'd share that with you. If I were on air, now's about the time that I'd ask you to phone in and share your Goospimples Whilst Driving moments. But I'm not, so I won't.

(* - Apart from my Scenic Interaction with a pole at a Warwick Uni car park a couple of years back. But we shan't talk about that here. It's not very funny (stop laughing!))

Oh Margie, you came and you brought me a Turkey...

...it's at the peak theee Top Fortyyy.

<Rant>Oh for the love of f***ing god, what the hell is wrong with the world? WESTLIFE??? MANDY?????? HOW HAS THAT GOT TO NUMBER ONE?!?!??

Oh yeah, I know, it's because the 14 year old girls like it.

I'm really holding back right now, despite this being a rant, as I could go into a massive speil about what is wrong with the music industry, but I don't have the time.

Still, at least Mad World is coming out in a coupla weeks... not that it'll be able to knock such a wonderful cover as Mandy off the top of the charts!!!

FOR F***'S SAKE. I MIGHT ASWELL RECORD THE SOUND OF MY FACE MOVING AROUND ON A CHAIR AND GET SOME PRETTY BOY TO DANCE AS THE VIDEO. AAAAAAHAAAGHAAGAGHGAGHHG*
</Rant>

And... relax. Dunno why I get annoyed at this still, I knew years ago that the charts meant nothing.

(* - I wonder if that would work...? Anyone got Gordon Kidson's phone number?)

RaW Radio Warwick - Best Student Radio Station Two Thousand... AND THREE!!!

YES! They've done it! They've fupping done it! They've gone and got Best Student Radio Station at the 2003 SRA Awards!!

Bloody well deserved too, from everything I can gather. If you're from RaW and you're reading this, then well done, that is fecking brilliant - you should be bloody proud of yourself!!!. :-)

Not only that, but the Top Man (TM... actually, that is a trademark isn't it? I wonder what'd happen if the word trademark became trademarked? What? Supposed to be writing a Blog? About something other than total shite? Oh.) Dave Shipp won Best Production Innovation, and got Bronze for Best Speech based non factual

AND, the legend that is (Chris) CARTER has won Best Male!!!! I'm not going to swear... actually, stuff it, I will: FUCKING YES!!!! It's about fecking time for people to realise what an amazing talent Chris is and I'm just so pleased that he's now going to get the exposure that (fingers crossed, although I don't really think I need to) will springboard him into a fucking good radio job.

Carter, I salute you. You big spacer. "Neeeeegh"

T'was a amazing atmosphere and everyone had a great time - plus it was ace to see the likes of Mr Carter, Mr Shipp and Ms "Surrogate Sister" Nicholson again... and no one can argue with free Budweiser all night!

The one minor downside to it was that the coach we were supposed to get broke down. By the time the replacement coach got us to the awards, they'd already started and Dave'd already got Bronze for SBNF and won BPI. You'd think they'd've fecking waited, wouldn't you? Me and Russ B were *so* pleased...

... but in the end, who gives a darn. RAW WON BEST STATION, DAVE WON BEST PROD INNOVATION AND CARTER WON BEST MALE!!!

Did I mention that already? :-)

I'll put photos of the ceremony online tonight... although maybe not the Carter & Scullion spacer-based ones.

"Umm..."

It's a very very Mad World

I'm not one to get excited about Now That's What I Call Music albums. They're full of bland pop shite, coupled with hip hop tunes that you've heard played over and over AND OVER on the radio for what seems like years, with a sprinking of dodgy commercial dance music on top.

But every now and again, a tune sneaks it way onto a Now album that is just fantastic. It's happened on Now 56. Right at the very end of CD 2.

The track in question is Gary Jules - Mad World, which is a cover of the classic Tears for Fears track.

It's shed loads better, too, in my opinion, with a wonderfully haunting style that just hits you right there (/me points at heart) whenever you hear it.

I first heard the song this time last year, as it's played during an great scene from the equally great film Donnie Darko (which I saw in the cinema, bought the region 1 DVD of, saw in another cinema and then bought the region 2 DVD of... but that's another story)... and I downloaded a copy of it rather sharpish after hearing it.

Now I'm going to get a legit copy of it. And so should you.

It might be worth waiting for the single's release date in December rather than spending £14 tho :-)

Dave Gorman

I went to see Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure on Sunday, with The Dave, Pauly, Chanmander, Paul "Fadefast" H and Mr + Mrs Hammond.

It was chuffing brilliant. Funny, compelling, and just brilliant. 2 hours of Dave Gorman talking on stage, with hardly a pause for breath.

If my lecturers were like this at Warwick, I might've actually turned up to them rather than staying at RaW all the time!! Unlikely, though :-)

I know this sounds entirely vague, but during the performance he asks us not to let on anything about it, so as not to spoil the surprise for anyone else who wants to see it. So I'm not going to.

But you must see it! At this point in time there are still tickets available for a number of performances - check out this TicketMaster page to check availability and book tickets!

Will this day ever end?
  • Some days fly past - before you know it it's lunchtime, then you have your lunch, do some bits and pieces and you notice it's time to go home.
  • Other days seem about right.
  • Some days drag on and on.
  • On a very rare occasion, there are days where you wonder if time may be inexplicably come to a halt. That's today.
I don't think the fact that, all day, I've been writing specifications for a program that I've already coded has helped me much.

That and the fact I'm completely shattered and also a bit apprehensive about my live show tomorrow.

Also, I'm bored with writing specs. Hang on, I've mentioned that already.

Either way, I thought it was 11:15 at 9:50 this morning. About an hour ago I was getting ready to log off and go home. Man I'm bored. It's these specs I'm writing - did I mention that?

Well, anyway, our file server's just been shut down because it's been infected with a virus, so I think I might just go home!

I new that VBA coding would come in handy.... ;-)

Losing Weight and Getting Fit

I've been putting this off for what must be around a year now, but I've finally decided that it's time to get myself (back) in shape.

Coming to this decision's not been easy, but it's been gradually pressing on with each pizza, each pint of Carlsberg and each escalator trip that I've managed to accumulate over the past few months.

Now it's at a head. I'm going to do something about it.

This is really in 3 parts:

1) Go to the gym regularly
2) Eat healthily
3) Drink less beer

1) is actually going quite well. I've been to the gym 6 times in the past 2 weeks and I've managed to get to the stage where I don't want to die after a 30 minute workout. My aim is to try and be able to run 3 miles in 25 minutes by Chrimbo. I managed one mile in 10 mins last night. Hey, it's a start, alright! :-)

2) kinda started on Monday, and then on Tuesday. I say kinda, because Monday lunch consisted of a Maccie Dees large meal and Tuesday breakfast consisted of a Warley canteen full-fat-fried brekkie. Today, though, it's ACTUALLY starting.

Unless they've got a tasty fattening veggie option for lunch. :-)

3) is going amazingly well! 3 days without beer so far! 3!!!!

I might report back on this when it actually gets to an amount worth mentioning. :-)

Anyway, who knows - by Christmas I might be able to wear my "Phat Bastard" T-Shirt without feeling that it's just a mis-spelling...

Oh riiight, now I get it

Hold onto your annoying white text, folks, cos here goes another (hopefully final) set of "Hidden Text About the Matrix Revolutions that you probably shouldn't read unless you've seen the film":

How wrong was I? I really didn't get it last time. Neither did Lev or Pete. The thing is, you simply have to see the Matrix Revs more than once. The first time - as I said - I was wholly unsatisfied, left feeling that there was just so much potential that wasn't realised.

However, that's largely because I think I was expecting something else.

Knowing vaguely what it was all about this time, and with a couple of things pointed out to me about some of the bits that at first just didn't make sense (did you know that all the machines/programs cannot lie?), it was just so much better. Quite clever, actually.

On the downside, Carrie Ann Moss still needs an acting transplant - or simply a job not involving film, tv or theatre. When your acting is upstaged by Keanu Reeves, you know something's not right. Also, there are some cheesy bits in it, but a feck load better than I thought at first.

I ain't giving away the plot, but I will say that you've gotta see the film twice to appreciate it. There's so much you'll get second time round.

A solid 4 stars. Which is a vast improvement from around one.

and yes, I couldn't be arsed to try and be clever through only hiding certain words this time :-)

Does Weebl = Great or something?

There are two sites on the web with stuff that make me laff a lot. Both of them have the name Weebl in them. Which, I'll be honest, is a little strange seeing as I've never heard of anyone or anything called Weebl in my life prior to these!

Anyway...

Weebl and Bob is only something I've only recently been exposed to, but I think it's only fair for you to experience it too. Check it out!!!

Weebl's stuff is full of insane flash animations, from games through to The Funniest Flash Animation I've ever seen (you must have your speakers turned on for it).

That's all for now!

We Get Free Time!!

As you're probably aware, I've been helping out Dream 107 for the past couple of months, doing early breakfast.

This has generally meant that, because I have to devote just about every day to coming in and doing a show, alongside my real job, I've had pretty much no free time. And when I do get it, I go out on the lash because I feel the need to socialise.

But I've asked to come off it... and now I am. That with getting a quality (albeit temporary) slot on a Saturday afternoons, life is now rather good!

So expect plenty of site updates in the next few weeks... I'm sure I can come up with some more happy hard core-based remixes of 80s cartoons.

I knew you'd be thrilled. :-)

Yep, you read right... from next Saturday (15th) and for the whole of November, I'm going to be presenting Sports Saturday!!! It's from 2-6pm, and I'm very excited!!!

That's all :-)

The Matrix Revolutions

Note: This review has been written in "I'll Only Tell You What I Think If You Want Me To" text, so I don't alter your opinion of El Matrixio (namely, specific words are hidden as white text. Clever, huh? Yes, that was a rhetorical question). Highlight the paragraphs to complete the review

I've seen it. This evening. With Lev and Pete.

This film had a lot to do. The Matrix Reloaded really wasn't as good as The Matrix, but many would argue that this was often the way with trilogies... and that the final chapter would make up for the second's shortcomings.

But did it? The answer is a wholehearted NO!

It was so poor that we spent almost 1 hour discussing how disappointed we were with it! This chat was far more enjoyable than the film.

It was pretentious, over-long, non-sensical, unsatisfying, with some terrible acting from many of the main cast! All the spark from the original is most certainly gone as you just don't care about the main characters and programs within The Matrix.

There were some good bits, though. In particular the Agent Smith(s) vs Neo fight was really smart + well CGI'd.

It had so much potential and it was a fupping shame to see that so little of it was realised!

Essentially, as Lev would put it: "It was perpetual bollocks".

That'll do for now, I'm not going to tell you the plot... you'll have to see it for yourself!
(Although personally I wouldn't bother)

Tuesday, November 04, 2003 at 9:14 AM

Remember, remember the 5th3rd of November...

Last night I went round to a mate-of-a-mate's house for some fireworks fun.

T'was pretty much your usual affair:
- Bonfire made up of any unwanted garden bushes, planks of wood and wood-effect Jaguar dashboards *
- Mostly garden-sized fireworks

* may be a lie

I say mostly, because of the one particular firework that the buyer was actually taken round to the back of a shop to buy (a kind of "No, no, sir, how dare you insult my business, we only stock legal items here" + wink + nudge + hand beckoning to the back of the store thing).

It was a cylinder, about 1 ft high by 0.5 ft diameter, with loads of individual tubes on it, each containing a rocket.
Along the side of the cylinder was a message reading "SPECTATORS MUST BE AT LEAST 25 METRES AWAY FROM FIREWORK". The garden was 7 metres long.

Still, it wasn't quite as insane as expected, although it did seem to go on forever.

Ironically the most frightening 'work of the whole night was an innocent-looking Catherine Wheel, which most of us who attended now believe could be used in modern warfare as a kind of Sonic Weapon.

This thing screeched. I mean, really screeched. For a good 10 seconds, which seemed like much longer. I've never heard a banshee before, but I've got a suspicion she'd sound a bit like this (hmm, perhaps Mrs Catherine Wheel was a banshee in her spare time...).
Pretty much everyone in the garden had their hands to their ears, and I'm sure I can still feel a slight ringing now...

I might get myself some earmuffs.

Feedback from drivetime show

"Listening to you made me want to knock you out... so in that respect you did a great job at being a commercial radio DJ." - My mate Craig

That's all. This simply deserved its own post, in my opinion :-)
