Pat's BlogMonday, September 20, 2004 at 9:36 PM The Night Shift I love digital. But I miss real data... the kind you can hold in your hand, the kind that you really feel, the kind that doesn't become inaccessible due to a file server falling on its arse repeatedly. Sadly, working in a Server Team, I don't get to appreciate this "real data" as much as "digital". Normally that's fine (after all how many times have you moved One of our file servers at work fell over the other day and our team have been doing a lot of diagnosis, disaster recovery and other such great things over the past few 24 hour periods, in between wandering down to our company's data centre and pressing the "restart" button on our server a number of times. Why'm I boring you with this information? Because, as you might guess from the title, I'm doing some work overnight tonight... on this lovely server. Turns out there are some, uh, shagged bits of the disk on the box. To get all the files off it ok, we need to find the broken bits and leave them alone. Sadly, the broken bits cause the server to crash when you access them. Not the sort of thing that can be done during business hours. Also, not the sort of thing that takes a few minutes. So, here I am, at home, watching Liverpool get beaten by The Scum (Man U) with my work laptop; keeping an eye on the server and ready to call the people in the data centre to ask them to hit the big red (*) power button on our server. I'm working 9pm-3am. I've already done a full day's work today. It's going to be a long night. * Actually it's about the size of a 5p piece and is black with a tiny green LED in it, but that doesn't sound so good 0 Comments: |
